Connaught Scientists!

Today the year 9 girls went to a STEM event at Sir George Monoux College. The girls got the opportunity to extract DNA from a kiwi fruit, make DNA bracelets and learn about careers in science. Some even got to do some coding! I hope today was fun and a bit different from learning in our own classroom.

Here are some snaps from today:)

Skittles science :O

The year 8's were learning about white light and how we see colour.
We thought that this skittles trick goes well with the topic and that it would be quite cool to do.

You can try it yourself at home!
Arrange skittles in a circle on a plate, slowly pour hot water in the center and vuala!

Have fun and let me know how it goes:)

BTW How do we see colour with our eyes? Can anyone explain?

Blinded by the Light :O

In the spirit of the season and Christmas jumpers, this little practical seemed like a perfect choice!

Check out the cute year 7 girls burning Magnesium ribbon!

What caused this bright light to appear? Can anyone explain?

Bio inspired flying robots for the future cities!

Last Thursday, the girls got to visit the Imperial College and listen to a lecture by Dr. Mirko Kovac who took us on a journey of future smart cities - a complex ecosystem that could see flying, friendly robots co-existing alongside humans and improving our way of life.
Drones flying above us delivering blood samples quickly across hospitals, drones delivering medicine and food to emergency areas, amazon drone delivery service, etc.
Can you imagine a robotic Earth?
In Japan, already there is a hotel that is fully serviced and staffed by robots.
Check out this video!

Hmm, there are certainly pros and cons when it comes to this subject.
What are your thoughts?

Plant cell cake

Last week Miss Ali's year 8 class has been learning about plants, including how they grow, make their own food, reproduce and what type of cells they are made from. Miss Ali's class has taken this topic on a whole another level when the girls got together and made a palisade cell!
What's unique about their leaf cell model is that it is actually eatable!

The leaf cell model is a cake and it looks and tastes amazing:)
Impressive! These ladies got some serious baking and science skills!

Can you name all the parts of the palisade cell that you see in the photo below?

Implantable Neuroproesthetics Lecture

On the 16th of November, 10 year 11 students including myself, attended a lecture by Dr Iasonas F. Triantis from the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, City University London The lecture he gave was entitled, "Implantable Neuroprosthetics: Talking with Neurons for Diagnosis and Therapy". The lecturer spoke about how electronics can help people with paralysis and even people with mental disorders such as bipolar. We were also able to view new research (only 5 days old) which showed how new electronic developments were able to restore leg movement in a formerly paralysed patient, something that was thought to be impossible before then. The lecture inspired all of us to consider a career which will allow us to be creative as well as articulate, which is what bioengineering is all about. After the lecture we all left spell-bound and excited about the prospect of going into something as meaningful as bioengineering. We are grateful that Ms Krunic and Mr Patterson gave us the opportunity to go to this lecture and we hope to go to many more!
